Sunderland seems to be brimming with new restaurants recently. When I was at university it was basically eat at Wetherspoons or Nandos, now there’s new choices springing up all over the place! No 2 Church Lane sits across from the Empire Theatre and has a menu filled with different burgers, and a wide selection of beers and gins. I’d heard all good things so was eager to get me a burger!
There are a choice of nine different burgers for the meat lovers, with either a 6 oz patty, char-grilled chicken butterfly, buttermilk chicken breast or a fish finger stack if you’re after a bit of a burger change. There’s also a good selection of vegan and veggie options, with a portabello mushroom and halloumi cheese burger that sounded gorgeous. Not that I’m ever going to turn down a beef burger, but it’s nice to see a restaurant that caters for vegans with more than a few options at the end of the menu.
If making the burger choice wasn’t hard enough, there are also six different types of fries to chose from. I had to resist getting mine smothered in cheese. I decided on The Farmyard Burger with salty fries. The Farmyard is a 6 oz patty and a piece of crispy fried butterfly chicken, because how can you choose between both (when you’re greedy)? It came topped with streaky bacon, cheese and smothered in a beautiful BBQ sauce. It was amazing. The chicken was gorgeous and the chips were the sort of homemade chips your Nan makes. I don’t think I could pick a fault with any of it.
It was a lunch time and my friend was driving so we couldn’t really try any of the many drinks available, but I recently saw on their Facebook page that they do mojitos so I’ll definitely be back for one of those!
No 2 Church lane is definitely worth checking out if you love burgers as much as I do. It’s a great addition to Sunderland’s restaurant scene with a lush menu and a lovely, chilled atmosphere.
