Afternoon tea generally brings to mind a scone with jam and a cucumber sandwich, all washed down with a cup of PG Tips (sorry other tea bags, I’m biased). Well there wasn’t a scone in sight at the new Hilton Garden Inn, Sunderland, where I was given the chance along with a group of north east bloggers, to try their American afternoon tea. Think, burgers, smothered chicken wings and thick milkshakes…
The Hilton Garden Inn is new to Sunderland in 2016, situated right beside the Stadium of Light. Along with the hotels 141 hotel rooms, it also has it’s very own Karbon Grill Kitchen and Bar where Pan-American cuisine is served for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For those who enjoy a good scone, there is your traditional afternoon tea available, but we were dying to try their signature American version- the American Sharing Tower. This included (pictured below):
- Pork and chorizo sliders with BBQ sauce
- Buffalo chicken wings with hot sauce
- Mini calzones
- Cheese and pickle bites
- Mini key lime pie slices
- Mississippi mud cake slices
- Pecan tart slices
- Mini strawberry and banana milkshakes
Everything was good, but I’d have to say the Pork and chorizo sliders were my favourite. The chorizo was actually in the burger rather than a topping as we all imagined and it worked really well. Close second were the cakes. Has anyone really come across a bad cake before? The key lime pie was gorgeous and of course the Mississippi mud pie was lush- It had chocolate chips and was topped with chocolate brownie so it was always going to be great.
With the Grill being so convenient for the stadium, The American Sharing Tower would be a perfect treat before a match. Besides food served in the actual stadium, there’s never really been anywhere for visitors to have a meal so it’ll be nice for people to have that option. As well as the afternoon tea, the restaurant offers a range of American style meals, with Steaks, Fully loaded nachos, Pumpkin filled ravioli and Tennessee glazed ribs. Find the full menu here.
Thanks to the Hilton Garden Inn for inviting me along and providing a complimentary meal. The hotel looks beautiful and it’s a great new addition to Sunderland!
